"I'll remind everyone you said that when it starts taking over nuclear silos," replied Michelle coldly.

"Ugh, go away! You're mean and no one likes you here!" Aurora was at a loss why Michelle kept coming over to them just to bring up the same things. On the bright side, it was a good distraction to prevent her from thinking of the larger ramifications of how commonly animals were hunted for their hides.

Mellianne turned to Aurora. "Sweetie," this time in a slightly motherly voice, "unfortunately, that won't work on getting her to leave. People don't always go away cause you yell at them. In fact that just gives them more incentive to stay because they know it bugs you."

Less very carefully and deliberately continued cleaning his fingernails with the pamphlet, which was starting to look a bit crumpled.

Aravind wandered into the Dining Hall, an irregularly-shaped piece of paper in his hand. He'd been craving fruits lately, and, annoyed at the lack of variety in the forest... in late fall. Heh. Hmmm... there'd be bound to be some late-harvest stuff at a farmer's market, though, and he made a mental note to check Port Virtue next chance he got.
Absorbed in thought, he missed most of the conversation walking past the students' table, but paused as he drew even with Less-- nodding a bit awkwardly to Aurora, Mellianne, and Kahlen.
"Less, I got word back from the Katahdin Pack. They say the only thing they'll trade for re-spelling the collar is a spell of equal value, and there's a couple of options here. Do you know anyone around here who's decent at magic?"

Less set the stack of pamphlets down as he stood up to greet the professor. "Hello Professor Shiyal! I don't know any personally, unfortunately. There's one who I talked to, but there's been some trouble with a curse and I doubt he'd help even if there wasn't trouble happening." He thought for a moment. "There was a lot of magic around the computer room that one time, though, so there had to have been someone who was a really strong magic user. I can try to track them, but the smell of magic's permeated into the background so much that that'll be difficult. Want me to ask around the dorms?"

Aurora was pouting about Mellianne's point - but Michelle was really getting under her nerves.
"That was kind of an accident, Less." She still didn't quite understand how Tumult had come into being, but it wasn't because of anyone using magic that she was aware of.

At Verin's words, something flicked to life in Damien's eyes. With a calculated and weirdly rippling motion he rose, simultaniously pushing his chair backward slightly and planting his hands flat on the table. He was slightly bent forward, and his head was low above his shoulders in a stance meant to intimidate. His eyes glowered at Verin, who could probably see the very faintest spark of a glow in them. He made sure nobody else could.
"You will not touch a single student in this school, demon." His voice was ice, the words fire. "Touch as much as a hair on their heads and I will make sure you regret it." He radiated a slight bit of heat, probably noticeable to those around, but a lot more fury and alarm at the demon's presence. Whatever happened, he would position himself between Verin and the rest of the school if necessary, whether or not it would reveal himself to them. Damien had a good heart, and a strong sense of protection for those around him. Half an ear listened to the conversation next to him, hearing about things happening in the computer lab. He'd get to that later.
(( was a bit late to respond, my bad. Slept in today ))

Kahlen mentally face-palmed at Michelle's intrusion. The girl was really annoying when she brought up the same topics over and over. The arguments were old and Kahlen was sure everyone else was tired of listening to them.
She decided to not say anything, not wanting to get involved in anything involving what happened in the computer lab.
"Hullo, professor," Kahlen said to Shiyal, waving a little. She turned a bit pink.

Verin turned around to face Damien. "Whatever you are, it's obviously not humourous. Relax, it's not like I'm going to start slaughtering you all tomorrow. You don't get where I am today by being hasty. As much as I'd love to study you, it's the middle of the day and there is much work to be done. Always so much work. Don't worry, I'll be sure to enrage you later." He turned his attention to his plate as he began walking away, and wiped his finger around the edge to catch the drip. "Hmm, looks like enough." He grabbed the piece of meat off and as he walked it burnt into cinders and floated to the ground.

"Well, don't worry too much about it, then," he replied. "I was thinking there's probably a professor who could help, and I'm certain we have a magic professor around here. We'll figure something out. Have you talked to Somariel yet?"
At the display of aggression betwen Verin and Damien, Aravind raised an eyebrow-- but as nothing came to blows, he let it go.
"Hello, Kahlen," he answered, with a polite nod. No, this isn't awkward for HIM at all! He's a professor! They don't -get- awkward! ...Right?

As Verin walked off, Damien sat back down slowly - then realised his chair has moved, and pulled it under him before he fell over and crashed into it. A raised eyebrow remained in place, and absently Damien stirred the bowl of soup in front of him, half-started moving the spoon to hid mouth, then reconsidered. With a look of annoyance at the soup he put the spoon back down and shoved the bowl away.
"I really, really don't like him. Oh, hello Professor. Sorry for that, he just grates my nerves. He has this way of being a threat to people by merely looking at them, somehow."

"A lot of people don't like each other here," Less muttered quietly as he went for yet another plate of food (chicken nuggets and more mashed potatoes). After he returned, he raised his voice he said, "Damien? You know other students than I do, right? Are any of them good at magic?"

Having conveniently missed the preceding drama, Ada walked in while glaring at a sheet of paper. She put it on the table in front of an unclaimed chair, and then sighed.
"Oh, hi everyone," she said, noticing that the table was already partially occupied. "All work and no play, right?"

"You know the old line?" Ada asked. "All work and no play makes Jack (or Ada, in this case) a dull boy? I've been staring at this thing for the last week, and I can't get it to work."
The paper she gestured to was filled by a single massive diagram. There were multiple areas on it that were circled, with notes from "?" to "magic happens here".

Mellianne looked at it, but wasn't quite sure if she was reading it right. "Yeah I've heard of it. Hmm. What are you trying to make work?"
She was really hungry and was done with her food in no time flat. Now Mellianne was just sipping at her soda.

"It's a coprocessor," Ada explained, trying to very carefully avoid the topic of Tumult. "You stick it into a computer, and theoretically, it makes the computer much, much faster at certain tasks."
She shoved the paper across the table, not particularly caring where it ended up.
"Bah. It's beyond my abilities, and that design, anyways, is obviously going nowhere."

Mellianne blinked, not quite getting it. But suddenly she was reminded of her older brother. "Hey, if you want, my older brother is something of a genius. He might know a few books and other resources that could help you out! Want me to email him about it?"

"Maybe a few. Most of them are at this table right now." He gestured at Melianne. "Well, I guess that's one. Verin prolly has a lot of magic too, but he's not very likely to help you for anything. There's more people that have to be magic, but somehow I never run in to them. Oh, or wait. I think Trisha could maybe help, the angel girl we met on the beach."

"Hey, Ada!" Kahlen said as Ada came over to the table. She looked at the paper Ada showed them and scratched her head. Computers still weren't her thing, even though she did passably well in her computer science class.
"Well, don't feel bad. That computer stuff is substantially beyond -our- abilites." Kahlen grinned and offered Ada some chocolate cake that she had grabbed before Ada came in.

Less most certainly agreed that Verin wouldn't be likely to help. Yes there was that favor he had promised Less, but the werewolf was going to save it for something more important than a hunting trip. He followed Damien's gesture and noted that that was one of the girls who had been arguing with Michelle. "Hello?" he asked, "Could you do me a favor? I'll be sure to repay it."

Mellianne smiled. "No problem. If you want, I can give you his email and cell number and you can contact him yourself. I'll let him know that you'll try and get a hold of him, that way you can figure out what to give him and how to get it to him! I'm not really good with computers, and I wouldn't know what information he needs."
((and that way you can make up whatever his response is if you want))

"With Professor Shiyal's help, I'm looking to borrow a collar with a translation spell on it from another werewolf pack. Katahdin, is what he said they were called." Less paused to pop a chicken nugget in his mouth. After a moment, he continued. "They want a spell of equivalent value in return, but I cannot use magic. Just now Damien said that you're good at magic. Will you help me?"

Mellianne bit her lip trying to think. "I can only work with water. Is that alright? Though I should be able to come up with something that works without me needed to regulate it. I have a few small things that work that way, so it should be too hard to use that idea for other things. Do they need any spell that deal with water?"

"I don't know. Maybe if you had one that could purify it? Professor Shiyal?" The latter was called as Less twisted around in his chair to face the teacher, who he hoped hadn't left yet. "What kind of spells would the Katahdin pack consider valuable?"
