Tane held out a hand - in a wool glove, because of the cold - to shake. "Kia ora, bro. I'm Tane." His accent would be strange to most, but Scott, being from Kielder, might place it immediately to New Zealand.
"You bet I'm freaked out, bro. That gurl at the back's got snakes for hair! Next someone's going to tell me maguc spells're real or something.
"So you were here last semester? How us ut?"

Mellianne turned to Aiden and waved at Scott when she saw him. "Hello. Have a good winter break?"

"Hi, guys!" Kahlen said as Scott and Aidan reached their section of the bus. "What's up?"
She was partially listening to the strange conversations with the new students. She didn't know that much about science, so she wasn't particularly interested. The girl with the scarf seemed interesting.

Beau turned back to Farran and Laquinta while he kept an eye on the loud boy who had thrown the vial. He smiled good-naturedly at Farran. "I not know 'bout dat Farran. It all in da name." He then turned to Laquinta smile still wide. "Dere gonna be lotta extraordinaire type at dis Dymphna, you fit right in, cher."

"It's not pink, it's Scarlet!" She sighed, "Anyways, my name is Beia." She would have to keep an eye on this one. Those fangs could mean he was a vampire and no one was sinking their teeth into her. "What kind of yokai are you?" she asked with an inquisitive face.

"Whatever." Laquinta curled up into the corner of the bus and the seats, away from the rest of them. She was getting hit by jetlag, and a nap on the bus would do her good.

As Laquinta turned away, a quizzical look came over Beau's face as he wasn't sure what he had said to upset her. However, his smile quickly returned. "Cher got da right mind haha." With that he returned to his seat to resume his nap.

Destiny tentatively reached out to touch the little hedgehog-creature. "Oooh... he's so pretty!" she said. "Look at his little nose!"
"I've got a cat now, you know," she said importantly. "Her name is Tigger and she's pretty just like your Mikkie," (Desi was prone to giving cutesy nicknames to animals), "and she lives in the stables. She's really good at catching mice and she likes hamburgers just like me."

Mikhail snuffled Destiny's hand as she pet him. "Thanks. He definitely likes to be petted," Kahlen said, nodding.
"Ooh, really? I'll have to meet your cat. I've never met one that eats hamburgers, though." On second thought, Kahlen realized that cats eat meat.

"She does. She doesn't like pickles, though." Destiny wrinkled her nose. "You should come and see her. I can't wait to see her again."
Destiny didn't notice the slim calico making her way up the aisle of the bus until the cat jumped into her lap and sat there as though it were her proper place--which, of course, it was. Desi didn't question how the cat had managed to get on the bus; cats were just clever like that.
"Hey, pretty kitty!" Destiny cooed. Tigger rubbed her cheeks against the girl's hands, happy to see her provider-of-hamburger-scraps again.

All his immediate concerns taken care of -- Laquinta, snakes, Beau -- Farran tucked his legs up and settled back into his seat. He closed his eyes, though he wasn't particularly sleepy, and hoped very hard that nothing was going to explode.

Scott shook Tane's hand. He thought Tane's accent sounded familiar. "There's an entire class for magic here," he said, "dunno what they teach - Aidan and me don't have any powers, so didn't turn up to that class. Last semester was ok, but some of the other students freaked me out, too."
He looked around to see if Verin was on the bus. He didn't see the demonic boy, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. Scott lowered his voice:
"There's this one guy you'd better watch out for. Name's Verin; I was in the same suite as him last semester. He's an utter psycho..."
Raising his voice back to normal, Scott continued:
"What did you do to get sent here?"

Aidan responded to Kahlen and Melianne's greetings by smiling and turning towards them.
"Yeah, our break was good. We went back home for Christmas and enjoyed the warm weather... even got to the beach a couple of times." He shivered, "of course, that just makes coming back to the cold even harder..."

"Yokai? Wuzzat?" Herbie frowned at the strange word. "I's a naja, not a yokai or wadevah. Dunno wut dat is. Anyhoo, my neem's Herbie. Sorry fer the hair, I swear I dought it was pink. Nice ta meet cha."

Tane's eyes bugged out at being told there was a literal magic class. He shrugged at Scott's question. "Just good at sports, ao." The best and most multitalented sportsman his city had ever seen, possibly, but he didn't think of it like that. "And you? Uf you're not maguc, why're you here, bro?"
Scott made this 'Verin' (what sort of name was that?) sound bad, but for the moment Tane assumed he was just an annoying room-mate.

Mellianne smiled at Aidan. "I bet so. It's summer where you live, isn't it? I guess I'm sorta lucky that I live where it snows in the winter too. Doesn't mean that I like the cold though. And it's lucky that you live near a beach. The pool is nice, but the beach..." She slowly drew silent as she thought of the wonderful beach that she was going to go to the minute it warmed up here.

Herbie eagerly skipped over to next to Beia. "Naja are sneek people. Ya know, with a sneek's tail instead a legs. I just got me a bit a hoodoo ter fit in small speeces, since, yanno, fifteen feet a sneek isn't very handey in a bos. Or a pleen fer dat matter. Ya shoulda seen dem folks at de airpo't when I undid it. Sneek on a pleen! I tel ya, it was golden. Golden." With a happy grin he re-visualised the looks of flabbergasted horror the people had shown him. Exiting the plane and shouting 'sneek off da pleen noo' had been the best moment of the day for Herbie.

"Lucky ducks," Kahlen said to Scott and Aidan. "Eh, the cold's not too bad."
She made a face, indicating that she didn't quite believe her last statement.
"You're right. Your kitty is very pretty." Kahlen noticed the calico jump onto Destiny's lap. "Will she let me pet her?"
Kahlen reached out to let the cat sniff her hand.

Beia pondered it for a few seconds, finally realizing that 'sneek' meant 'snake'. Then she chuckled at the thought. "So you are a hebi yokai, with the snake part. I hope you aren't thinking of biting me, are you?" Beia said with a comical worried face, so much so that it was obvious she was joking.

"Why'd I bite ya, miss?" Herbie grinned, seeing the joke in her expression. "If I wanted ta get ya I'd just eat ya whole, I ain't poison. I's a yelloo boa, from Jemeeca. Dunno about dis hebby thing, I's just a naja. An'you? Are ya sumthin' special yaself?" He smiled, and peered at her with curious eyes. "I nevah seen a girl wid sca'let hair before."

Kip just kept glancing at her hands, and ducking the occasional bit of thrown glassware. The device had worked better than she'd thought, but the reversal of the melanin re-pigmentation was going a little bit too quickly for her taste. I need to fix that later.
After a few minutes, her hands went from white to pale blue, and her face was beginning to head in that direction, too. Oh well - there was someone with snakes for hair here. She'd done her research on humans at the base in Nevada, and that was definitely not normal. Someone with blue skin from a distant planet would probably fit in okay here.
She hoped.

Beia puffed up her chest and set her hands proudly on her hips. "I am a just a normal person. A normal person who guards the gate." She continued in her mind, 'Normal compared to everyone else back home, although these people seem normal too.' "So tell me, is there a gate at the school? Or something to guard from trespassers?"

'Loud boy' would be a good enough moniker, Mannie thought. He raised an eyebrow at the part about the inner coating on the vial. That meant that he'd have to get glassware with that same coating if he hoped to figure out the vial's contents safely. For now, though, he turned his attention to the rest of the bus. Immediately near him was a girl whose skin was turning blue.
"Hey, may I see your hands?" he asked her. That color was beyond what one would expect for a simple explanation like the bus being too cold. There weren't any naturally occurring blue pigments in the human body, so what could be causing it?

"Nope, I am a Yokai. I just guard the gate as normal gate guard would." She giggled and smiled at Herbie. One could not say if she was flirting or if she was just outgoing.

Tigger cautiously leaned forward to sniff Kahlen's hand. Then, apparently having decided the girl was being acceptably polite, she gazed directly into Kahlen's eyes and opened her mouth in a near-soundless "Mew?"
Tigger was cute, and she knew it.
