Kahlen stifled a squeal when the professor said she could 'keep' that horse for the semester. Not only was he friendly, he was a pretty paint. She wondered if the horse would like to meet Mikhail. The little hedgehog put up with a lot of Kahlen's weird ideas.
She glanced over at the hooded girl. She had seen her a few times, but never paid attention to her name.

"Are any of these draft horses?" Mannie asked. Those tended to less high-strung than other horses, so that meant they wouldn't bite, right? Also, did breeds of horse work like breeds of dog? Were purebreeds more likely to be a bit insane? If so, he'd want to work with a mixed-breed, not a pure one.

"Jane Ebonwood. As for experience... Well, back home, sometimes we went... no, that was another time." Not to mention a painful memory of things that were lost. "Let's just say... not very much."

Natoli shook her head. "Nope, draft horses are too big and eat too much for a school to have them, even at one like this. Plus they are more for pulling things. People don't normally ride draft horses. But these are all calm, and I think a few of them are calmer than most. I'll introduce those of you that don't have experience riding to those that are calmer."
Turning to Jane. "Thank you, Miss Ebonwood. I'll also take that into consideration." She thought one of the special horses would be the best for the young vampire.
Turning to the front of the class, she took another deep breath and started on her rules speech. "I have a few rules. 1) Don't harm the horses. I understand that there are accidents where the horse may get injured, but no deliberate harming of the horses. You will get one warning. Do it again and I will ban you from my class. 2) Make sure to arrive on time so you don't have to sit on the side while I work with the others. If you aren't here on time, I won't be able to make sure your tack is properly done before you ride and you could get injured.
"3) Never approach a horse from the back. That is a safety rule and I will not be lenient on it at all. They can't see you coming back there and they will kick cause they think they are being threatened. You will end up in the infirmary if that happens, if you're lucky. 4) Do not spook the horses. They don't like being spooked. Things will go a little more smoothly since I can talk to them, but still don't. You may get hurt before I can calm them down.
"5) You will take care of your own horses. If you wish to show up in the mornings before classes, you may also help muck out the stalls and feed them, but you need to do both. I'll show you all how to take care of them during the third class, but until then I will be doing it. 6) Treats are treats. No treats for the horses during class time. You have to come down here yourself at some other time, when I'm there, to feed them treats. We have treats here, so don't bring any for them either.
"That's it for now. If I find that I need to make up another rule, I will add to this list. Next class, we'll see the ones that say they've had experience ride a bit so I know where to place them, and for you to watch them. The class after that, I'll teach the rest of you how to care for, which includes grooming, and how to tack up the horse, which I will also go over what all the pieces of tack are."
She took another deep breath. "Now all of you besides Mr. Alvarez, and Miss Ebonwood. Go and choose a horse unless you have questions. Mr. Alvarez, you can watch and see how everyone picks their horse and just watch the horses in general. Miss Ebonwood, I would like to have a word with you before you pick out a horse."
((You all can choose breed of horse, coloring, gender (gelding or mare, no stallions), and names as long as the breed and coloring match, and the names aren't stupid. I'll ask you to change them in a PM if the breed and coloring conflict or the name is something that no one in their right mind would name an animal, none of the animals are sue animals and the special horses just are horses that can stand creatures like vampires. The names are because it would be the names on the nameplates, and I highly doubt that the owners would name them odd things. Nicknames could be whatever you want though.))

Kahlen listened to the rules. She had been around horses and knew about what the professor was talking about.
After the professor released them to pick their horses, Kahlen made a beeline for the horse she was petting before. He leaned his head over the stall door and whickered when Kahlen scratched between his ears. She finally looked at his nameplate, so that she'd know what to call him. It read: Emporer Maximilian.
"Hm," she said to the horse. "I think I'll just call you Max."
He nodded his head and pressed his face into Kahlen's arm for more scritches.

Oh, crap. What had she done? Jane stood where she was while the others went to pick their horses, and waited for the teacher.

Natoli walked over to Jane while the others were picking out their horses. She really didn't want to scare off the girl, so she tried to keep a slight smile and a calm voice.
"Miss Ebonwood. I've noticed that most of the horses are uncomfortable with you. The last six in the back are bred to be able to not panic when they sense people like you. I just wanted to let you know. I'll speak with the others to tell them not to panic when they sense you nearby, but I would feel better if you rode one that won't forget that if it gets scared. That's all I really wanted to say, but I figured you wouldn't want me to tell you that in front of the class."
((Special horses are just like the others, choose breed, color, gender, and name....and for everyone, I'll try and post the next class in a day or two, please post what horse you chose in the meantime!))
