"I guess I am slightly out of date then." Beia let out with a sigh.

'Out-of-date by three hundred years?' Yang wondered a bit. His suspicions were aroused - was she hiding something?
"Anyways, following the collapse of the Zhou Dynasty, China was enveloped in a centuries long era of chaos and warfare..."
The lecture continued on.

Tigger had grown tired of the school bag, and wanted someplace comfortable to sit; so she stepped out onto the floor and hopped neatly into Destiny's lap.
Destiny, who had been dozing lightly as the class reached its midpoint, startled slightly as she felt the weight of the cat's four paws on her lap. Tigger sat primly, head peeking up over the top of the desk, and began to purr.

Taking notice of the cat's purring, Yang took a quick peek at Destiny.
'She making this really f***ing difficult...' he swore to himself.
Ignoring the cat, he continued to lecture until eventually...
"Alright everyone, it's the first break; be back in ten!"

Mellianne just stayed in the classroom, getting up to stretch a bit. But she didn't really have any reason to leave the room. She instead went over the notes she had taken to make sure she could at least read them, then back over to make sure she could understand them.

Destiny sat frozen in her seat, wanting to push the cat off her lap but afraid that Tigger would protest or, worse, go running across the room. She was going to get in so much trouble....
When the professor declared a ten-minute break, Destiny unceremoniously grabbed the cat and stuffed her back into the school bag before Tigger knew what was happening. In the general chaos of a dozen students stretching, chatting, and finding restrooms, Destiny ran for the door with a loudly mewing school bag slung around her shoulder.
She returned three minutes later with an empty school bag, out of breath and feeling lucky that she'd escaped the professor's notice.

Beia flopped her head down on the desk. 'Just a quick nap, to recharge for the day.' She thought as she drifted off into her dreams. She was still quite asleep when the 10 minutes were up.

When the class had died down, and the ten minute break was over. Yang locked the door and had a big smile on his face.
"Good new everyone! Pop quiz!"
He pulled out a pile of paper.
"I hope you paid attention!"
He was not being harsh, really. The questions were exceedingly easy, and the percentage it was worth was so low that it was only a check to see if the class had paid attention.
Really.

Mellianne gave a sigh of relief. She had just been looking over her notes to make sure she could read them, but she had gotten some studying done as a bonus. Now she might actually do a little better on this pop quiz.

Beia kept sleeping, unaware of the impending test.

Walking around the class, Yang handed out the short quiz before coming up to Beia. He dropped the test before her, and then gently gave a few knocks on her head before moving on. Next stop, the late girl...

"Whut?" Beia looked up sleepily to see the teacher walking away. Looking down again, she saw her test and began working on it. All the answers she put down were accurate as of 300 years ago, except for what they had learned in class.

Yang dropped a test paper before Destiny and bent over to her ear.
"See me after class," he whispered.

Jane had been copying down the lecture in shorthand when the professor had called the break. As long as she kept busy, she could stave off sleep. But now there was a break... she couldn't eat. Didn't really know anybody. Doing nothing would invite sleep... Well, she could always pray. She went to find a quiet place.
Jane returned shortly before the break was up, still in pain. The hell of it all was her punishment. Or perhaps an attempt to turn her from the path of righteousness. Either way, she would bear through it. She sat back down. When the professor announced the quiz, she wasn't that worried. After all it was only information from one class, right? Just a matter of recalling everything. She started a mental checklist of the things they had learned while she waited for her paper.

If Destiny hadn't cared so much about her cat, she might almost have hated the little calico. She had been getting along fine here; and nothing really bad had happened (even the incident with the computers had ended well). Apparently the professor had seen the cat after all; there really wasn't any other explanation. And now he was going to be angry at her.
Well, it had to happen sooner or later. It always did.
Destiny scribbled down some answers on the test paper, but it was doubtful that she was actually reading the questions or answering anywhere near coherently.

Yang sat back after handing all the papers out and watched his class. Fifteen minutes passed, and he recollected the papers. Stacking the quizzes and putting it aside, he turned on the projector again.
拼音 The Pinyin System
"Okay, I think it's time we actually started learning Chinese. We'll begin by practicing the Pinyin system, information about which you should find in Chapter 2 of your textbooks."

Mellianne took her notebook out again and flipped her book to chapter 2. She hoped she did well on the pop quiz. She tried to make sure her writing wasn't too cramped and stayed readable.

The lecture continued on. Yang said some things about how to pronounce Chinese, what each combination meant, and how Pinyin was only a pronunciation guide.
Then the real fun began.
"Now that you know this," Yang said to the class, "I'd like for you to get into groups and practice the sounds with each other."
