Warm sun and a slight breeze made for a day that Desi didn't want to spend indoors. Consequently, she had taken her lunch (a foil-wrapped hamburger from the cafeteria) and tucked it into the pocket of her faux-fur-trimmed pink jacket, and was wandering the grounds.
The stables were still mostly unused, and the girl coming down the path didn't have any particular interest in them at first. But rounding the corner of the building came a patrolling calico cat; and that did interest Desi, who as a rule loved small furry things.
The girl stepped off the path and squatted down. "Hi, kitty cat!" she cooed, wiggling her fingers in a little wave of greeting.
The tip of the calico's tail flicked in curiosity, but she made no move yet. Employed as natural pest control, she was used to bowls of food and the occasional tidbit from a passing human; but she wasn't a pampered house pet, and was naturally cautious around people she hadn't met before. She paused in her patrol.
"You're so pretty!" Desi complimented the cat. "And you have such pretty little whiskers and pretty little paws and..."
The cat, accepting these compliments as her due, made a tentative step toward the girl. She sniffed the air. Was that food she smelled?
Slowly, Desi reached a hand out to the cat, extending just the first two fingers. "Hi, kitty!" she said again. "Want to say hi?"
The calico was used to that high-pitched baby talk. Sometimes it meant you would be squeezed to within an inch of your life; but on the other hand, sometimes it meant good things to eat. She was optimistic. This girl didn't seem to be the squeezing sort; and there was that tantalizing smell. She padded forward and extended her nose to touch the girl's fingers. Then, seeing that the girl didn't attempt to scoop her up, she pushed her head into the girl's hand.
Desi held her breath as the cat greeted her. Suddenly remembering her lunch, she withdrew the slightly squashy package of hamburger and unwrapped the foil. She tore off a chunk of meat and placed it on the ground in front of the cat, who sniffed at it, licked it, and finally took it between her jaws and ate it.
"Awww, aren't you a beautiful kitty?" Desi was keeping up a running stream of compliments, and--more importantly, to the cat--a steady flow of hamburger scraps.
Only once did the cat reject a tidbit, and that was soon put right when Desi peeled the pickle from it. "That's okay," Desi confided, "I don't like pickles either."
Full of hamburger and feeling quite friendly toward this human kitten, the calico rubbed herself against Desi's knee. The girl yelped and fell on her rear, causing the cat to startle a little, then relax as Desi giggled and readjusted her seat in the grass. Looking questioningly at Desi, the cat put one paw on the girl's knee, then a second paw. As nothing that resembled squeezing was happening, she climbed properly into the waiting lap.
Desi sat in the grass, stroking the calico and smiling.
