Name: Theda Marlene Turner
Age: 10
Hair color: Dark brown
Eye color: Bright green
Height: 4'9”
Appearance: Theda's hair is the color of aged mahogany, the kind of dark rich hues you find in polished museum furniture pieces that royal bottoms once sat upon centuries ago. The fact that it's mainly unbrushed, and falls in a wild curly mane down to her knees only seems to add to the beauty and depth of the earthy locks. It never tangles and matts as normal hair should, as if every gust of wind that blows through it combs it into perfectly imperfect chocolate tendrils that can be coaxed into behaving, but never tamed.
Her eyes are the shade of fresh green leaves springing from tree branches, bright and luminous as they're kissed by the morning dew in the first golden rays of dawn. This in itself would garner attention, but since the almond-shaped orbs peer out at the world from a face tanned as dark as tobacco leaves it makes them even more mesmerizing. Her skin is smooth and flawless, like a cinnamon mocha cappuccino without the foamy bit on top. She bears only one scar, an ugly slicing wound across her chest. Thick black lashes and delicate arching eyebrows compliment an unusual beauty in the making; with high cheekbones, full lips, and a dainty nose. Right now she's just a pretty little girl, but one day...oh, lock up your sons!
Even though she is typically streaked with dirt from wandering about outside, she never appears to be actually filthy. She never tracks mud around with her bare feet (she refuses to wear shoes, no matter the weather), and any sprigs of leaves or blades of grass stuck in her hair always look deliberately placed. It's as if they belong there, like a jeweled ribbon belongs in a queen's braid.
While she performs all the hygienic necessaries of a normal girl, she doesn't use soap or toothpaste as the synthetic or animal products in them cause her to break out in hives. The dirt simply rinses off of her, leaving her clean and fresh as if she'd been scrubbed with a loofa dipped in bleach. The lack of manufactured cleaning products doesn't hamper her in any way. Her teeth are always white, and she has a constant subtle scent of fresh spring flowers about her, even in the winter.
In the grand scheme of things Theda is on the tall side with a burgeoning willowy figure, due mostly to an already generous length of leg. She has an innate grace in her movements, like grass suppling on the breeze. If she had her own way she'd wear nothing, but that's not exactly an option. Having no real fashion sense, and not inclined to care about it one way or the other, she wears whatever vintage-inspired things her adopted mother sends her.
Biography: A young eager botanist working on his PhD thesis was wandering in a private forest reserve one day when he happened upon a lovely natural spring-fed pond. Overwhelmed at the variety of mosses and lichens gracing the ancient trees and stones, he fell to the ground and kissed the moist earth. From somewhere above him he heard a tinkling giggle, like the sound of raindrops filtering through leaves. Startled, he looked up into a pair of luminous green eyes and was instantly smitten by the beautiful dark-skinned woman peering down at him from the trees. Having become a bit lonely, the hamadryad charmed him instantly and took him in as her lover and pet.
For years they lived a blissful happy life in the woods, and as a result of all their 'pollination' escapades a child was born. The dryad cared for the baby as a mother should, and the father, as befit his station, only spared the infant the gentle attentions her mother told him to make. His heart and mind were for the dryad alone, and he provided whatever was necessary so that he could gain the woman's affections. The seasons turned and in the spring of the girl's second year the hamadryad planted a seed near her own tree for her daughter to bond to.
Two years later, while the little family was out enjoying the blooming sunflowers in a clearing, a terrible tragedy struck. The private reserve had been sold by the last living heir to the property, and the new owners wanted to clear most of the forest to build a resort for rich people. The hamadryad's tree, along with her daughter's sapling were among the victims of the chainsaw and bulldozer that day.
At the first touch of steel blades against her tree, the dryad let out a scream of pain and clutched at her bloodied side. For endless minutes her lover and her child watched as invisible forces inflicted mortal wounds, and they were helpless. The man simply howled in heart-breaking agony, unable to think beyond this nightmare of seeing his love in pain. The child was only four, and frantic with terror at the blood-curdling screams and horrifying sight of the beautiful woman's death. Driven mad with grief, her father picked up a rock and began slamming it against his head till he finally cracked his own skull and fell over dead.
Before she knew it she was running back to their grove shrieking at the top of her lungs. But it was too late, since the stump of her mother's tree was being pulled out of the ground to make room for the pool. Just as she arrived her own sapling, which she had only just begun to form a true physical bond with, was ripped out of the ground and tossed into a wood-chipper. Stumbling into the ravaged construction site, a deep gash streaking across her chest that cut all the way to the fragile bones of her sternum and rib cage, she gurgled a wordless plea and fainted in front of a lumberjack.
The new owner, a wealthy older gentleman with a young new wife, saw the child and quickly bundled her up and took her away in his helicopter so that his private doctor could try to save her. While the strange brown-skinned little girl recovered, the woods were searched for her parents. All they found was the body of a man who had apparently bashed his own head in with a rock lying beside a pile of twisted rotten wood that looked remarkably like the body of a woman.
Nothing else could be found about the child, and she refused to talk when she awoke. The doctors said it was probably the trauma, and told the wealthy man that all she needed was a loving family to make her forget her past. It seemed to be a perfect solution to his current problem. He and his wife wanted a child, but she didn't want to ruin her perfect figure by bearing one...and he was old and somewhat impotent. So, they adopted the little creature, and delighted in telling all their high-society friends how they had rescued her.
Her adopted mother, enamored with the glamour of the silver screen divas, named her after her two favorite actresses; Theda Bara and Marlene Dietrich. For all her desire or inability to talk at first, Theda proved to be a very intelligent girl. Her allergies to animal products and synthetic materials made mealtimes and clothing options a challenge, but with all that money they were easily dealt with. At first she would break out in hives if she wore anything other than untreated cotton or hemp. She built up a tolerance over time, and was eventually able to wear vegan dyed wool and wild silk (where the silkworm larvae is not killed).
However, after a few outings where she became sick after being given foods with animal products in them, she formed an overwhelming suspicion for any meal that she didn't prepare herself, or at least watch being prepared. She also picked up an unusual habit of holding the palm of her hand to any material she didn't recognize as being made of natural fibers to test it, regardless of if there was a person wearing the material or not. Beauty products were shunned at an early age, and she isn't likely to change her mind.
Theda never lost that somewhat haunted look from the memory of the tragedy in the forest, frequent nightmares keeping that day fresh in her mind. She obstinately refused to be molded into a gracious socialite, as she disliked having to socialize. She detested the city in a way that sometimes made her physically ill, and she was forever harboring little plants in her room. She'd have seedlings growing in small piles of dirt in her shoes squirreled away under her bed, or hidden behind the curtains in her china doll's tea party set. At a loss for her obsessive whimsies with plant life, her adopted parents replaced their pool with an indoor garden and koi pond.
Their mansion soon became a very popular place to go, just to see the stunning grotto. Plants and flowers seemed to spring right out of the tile flooring in such variety and beauty it was like walking within a dream. Theda was consoled by the garden, but her heart cried out to be released from her gilded cage of a life and run free through the forest. She worked hard at her studies, hoping beyond hope that if she completed them fast enough she might be allowed to grow up sooner and leave.
With her obvious gift for growing lovely things in impossible places, her intense studying, and her independent nature she was sent off to St. Dymphna's as soon as she could pass the entrance exams. After all, only the most special children attended that particular school, and her adopted parents truly hoped that the environment would help make her into a proper young lady.
Personality: She's a bitch, she's a lover! She's a child, she's a--(ahem...sorry...) Theda is a quiet, contemplative girl who keeps mostly to herself, and is quite mature for her age. She isn't shy or timid, she just prefers to watch people rather than jump in and interact. Because she was literally ripped away from her first deep connection with nature, her desperate hunger to reconnect is shadowed by a fear of losing it again. This translates into relationships with people as well, and though she feels a pull to socialize she is loath to actually open up and make friends.
Living in a city and being denied the true embrace of nature has given her a dark cynical streak. Her studies so far have been strictly monitored and geared toward becoming a socialite, so she is unaware that she has any other choice in life but to fit into her adopted parent's ideals. She isn't mean or vindictive without good reason, but when her temper flares there's usually a lot of nasty thorny tangling vines involved. Just as she's always had a soft spot for little shoots of grass bravely tempting fate by trying to grow between the cracks of the city sidewalks, she has a bit of a soft spot for people who seem to be lost and struggling as well. She's not much of a comforter, but she is good at listening.
Skills: She's 10... Her skills are looking cute, being somewhat irritating, getting good grades, climbing trees, and making things grow at will.
