Kahlen stood in front of the register, punching a few buttons. The main clerk, Bob, was standing next to her, making sure she was operating the register properly.
She had been training with Bob for the past couple of days, learning how to use the register and ring up items. She was confident that she got the hang of everything, but Bob still wanted to watch her for a bit.
'This job's going to be pretty interesting,' Kahlen thought. She'd never had a job that didn't include dance and wanted to try something new. She definitely liked the flexibility of her schedule, where she could work between classes. She even was allowed to do homework when she was waiting for customers and not tidying up the place.
Satisfied that Kahlen correctly turned on the register and got everything started up, Bob sat on a stool placed behind the counter and worked on some clerical type task while Kahlen waited for customers.

Miriam had discovered, in her navigations of the school and grounds, that rope would probably be a good thing to have. Unfortunately, she had not packed rope, despite the myriad of uses to which it could be put. So, off to the school store it was.
...if they'd even have rope. It didn't seem the sort of thing a school would have. Then again, this school was a bit beyond ordinary.
Miriam walked in, took a cursory glance around, and winced; it'd probably take her forever to find anything, and she'd almost certainly get distracted along the way. There were better ways. "Excuse me," she began, crossing toward the register and the girl behind it, "but do you have rope anywhere? And if so, where would I find it?"

Kahlen saw a girl walk into the store. Finally, a customer! She smiled brightly and greeted the girl, who glanced around the store and walked up to the register.
"Yup, we do have rope. We sell it in thirty foot bundles. You'll find it on that wall." Kahlen pointed to the wall on the girl's left. There were different colors of rope in bundles hanging on hooks.

"Awesome, thank you." Miriam wandered over to peruse the colors, eventually settling on a purple bundle, which she brought to the register. "I can't believe I forgot to pack some... maybe I really am going a bit nuts." She almost laughed, but cut it short at the last moment and instead fished her wallet out of her backpack, rifling through it. "Er, how much does it run?"

"No problem," Kahlen said cheerfully. "I'm glad you found some you liked."
Kahlen scanned the rope with her handheld scanner, finally getting it to work afte the third try. "This thing is so silly sometimes. Anyways, the rope runs twenty dollars a bundle."

"All right," said Miriam, amicably, and, after a quick double-check to make sure she'd got the right piece of the still not-quite-familiar currency, handed over a twenty. "Thanks again."

Kahlen took the twenty and put it in the cash box of the register. "Thank you! Have a great day!"
She bagged the rope and handed the bag to Miriam across the counter.

"You too!" Miriam took the bag, grinned, and wandered off.
Just think how much more she could get into, now there was rope available.
