When Mari heard she was to be sent to the United States for her schooling, the first thing that came to her mind was the crowds. Growing up hiding in the already secluded mountains hadn't exactly prepared her for life in the big city, and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't a little terrified.
But now that she had reached her destination, she was shocked to find that the airport was almost entirely deserted. Aside from the staff, security, and the handful of passengers that had been on Mari's plane, the airport was almost deserted. Shifting uncomfortably, Mari adjusted the straps on her backpack and started towards the nearby bus stop, grunting as she lugged her over-stuffed suitcase behind her.
She was dressed in a bright yellow t-shirt, and loose purple sweatpants, new clothes bought specially to help her blend in with the modern American teenagers, though she still wore her favorite rope sandals and tabi socks. One of the downsides to being part of an isolationist clan was not being terribly familiar with modern trends...
With a sigh, Mari sat down on a nearby bench, brushing back a lock of her reddish-brown hair. She'd seen a few other teenagers on the plane. She wondered if they were going to St. Dymphna's too... As the other passengers hailed taxis and met up with relatives, Mari felt her heart start to sink. Plastering a bright smile on her face, she tried to remain optimistic as she waited for the bus. She shouldn't worry, she'd make plenty of new friends!... Right?

After what had felt like an eternity in the averagely comfortable plane seat, the first thing Nocturna did upon arrival was to seperate herself from the crowd and take a few deep breaths. She stretched excessively and straightened her antique pink turtleneck back into position. With a sigh, she started rummaging in her blue sling bag and pulled out a college block. Right on the cover there was a short description of how to get to St. Dymphna's from the airport. > Bus... Bus... A grin spread on Nocturna's face as she noticed the sign pointing in the direction of the bus stop. She just hoped that the ride would be calm and not too long and/or boring.
The bus stop was empty, said for one girl. > Well either I missed it or we're the only two passengers. Welcome to hicksville. Unfazed by that girl's presence, Nocturna walked over to the bench, sat down at the opposite end from the girl and placed her bag onto her lap. Eventually, she slowly turned her head and said with a deadpan voice: "Hi. St. Dymphna's?" while hinting a wave with her right hand.

"Eh?" Mari jumped at the sound of another voice. She turned to see another girl, perhaps a year or two younger than her, a completely blank expression on her face. Mari took a moment to translate the sentence, her face lighting up when she realized what the girl had said.
"Y-yes! St. Dymphna's! Yes! Hello!" Mari mentally kicked herself for sounding overly enthusiastic. This was the first girl her age she had met in years. "Ah, yes. M-my name is Yaman-- um, Mari Yamaneko. Who are you?"

"Nocturna Ironclaw." Nocturna omitted the 'pleased to meet you' part on full purpose, not knowing if this girl was someone to be pleased to have met. Simultanously, she threw a little glance at the bus schedule hanging on the signpole. > Hope she's not too annoying... this is going to take a while.

"It's, ah, very nice to meet you, Nocturna." Mari smiled, stopping herself from adding -san at the last moment. She still wasn't completely used to speaking English, but she figured she would learn.
She sighed, glancing around nervously before turning back to the girl. "So... Uh... I take it you are going to be a first year too? I'm a little nervous..."

Derek managed to snag the last piece of his luggage from the conveyor and then headed in the direction that the sign indicated as leading to the bus stop, grumbling the whole way about weight restrictions limiting his selection of reading material. Echoes of Light had nestled himself across Derek's shoulders, beneath shirt and vest.
Derek arrived at the bus stop only to find both ends of the bench already taken. he sighed and leaned himself against the bus stop sign, hoping that the bus would come quickly.

"Yep, I am." Nocturna answered before throw a glance at the boy who had just arrived at the stop. > How long is this bus going to take?!
Already getting bored, she pulls a laptop out of her bag, puts it onto her lap and starts it up. Her bag is now at her side.

Hearing the distinctive sounds of a computer booting up, Echoes of light darted out of the boy's shirt and onto his shoulder. The demi was still for a moment, then dashed forward and, with a single beat of his wings, glided across the gap to settle on Nocturna's shoulder, scattering sparkles of reflected light everywhere as he went.

Mari had become something of an expert on how to tell when a person wanted you to go away, and Nocturna couldn't have made it clearer if she'd written it in the sky with golden fire.
Sighing, Mari turned to the boy, smiling as pleasantly as she could. "H-hello, I suppose you are going to St. Dymphna's too..." She trailed off as a smallish glimmer of light flashed across her vision, settling on Nocturna's shoulder. Mari shouldn't help but stare, uttering a profanity in her native tongue under her breath out of astonishment.

Derek froze when Echoes started moving - a reasonable precaution considering that demi-lizard claws were somewhat pointy and Derek had been poked in the eye more than once by over-enthusiastic demis - and he didn't realize what the black-scaled demi was doing until it had taken flight.
"Ack!" Derek gave a half-start, but froze again; It wouldn't do to jump over the girls here while trying to catch the errant demi - who was trying to get a look at Nocturna's computer screen - especially if they were going to the same school as he was.
He threw a glance at the girl on the far side of the bench. "Um, yeah. Sorry, um, I'm Derek. and that's Echoes. He's harmless, really, he just likes computers."

Nocturna flinched as the lizard-like creature dug its claws into her shoulder. After the initial shock had passed, she looked first at Echoes, then at Derek. "I'm Nocturna. Hi you two."
After these few words, her attention turns back to Echoes. "You don't happen to know functional programming?"

Echoes tilted his head one way, then the other, then spun and scampered across to Nocturna's other shoulder and stared at the screen again.
Derek rubbed at his forehead. "Demi's don't talk, and they're rather inconsistent when it comes to displays of intelligence. Sometimes they just act like lizards; other times you would swear they were smarter than me. They generally don't show off in public, though."
