Mathematics Class: First Lesson

[Æsc Thorne]

Aesc looked over his classroom, giving it the final once-over before the students for his mathematics classes arrived. His classroom was dimly-lit, with heavy drapes covering the windows. On the shelves lining the room were sundry items of strange-looking glassware, cabinets filled with ingredients and reagents, and piles of old-looking leather-bound books. A blackboard behind Aesc's desk bore the following writing in Aesc's neat, elegant writing:

PROFESSOR THORNE
MATHEMATICS

He decided that the room was ready, and opened the door and waited for the students to enter.

Once his class had taken their seats, he stood up from his desk and began to speak.

"Good morning class. As the more astute amongst you will have realised, this is Mathematics, and I am Professor Thorne. You may also have noticed that this room contains alchemy and chemistry equipment for for my other classes. This equipment is strictly off-limits during this class.
Now, to business... Some of you will have progressed further in your studies of Mathematics than others, and this will affect whether you are ready to progress into more advanced areas of the curriculum. I will therefore be administering a quiz during this first lesson, covering several basic areas of mathematics. This quiz will not affect your final grade, but it will determine the areas we will cover during this course. Are there any questions?"

Walking into the dimly-lit classroom, Somariel looked around and chose a seat near the front of the room. Reaching into her backpack, she pulled out a notebook and a pencil case, then took a pencil out of the case before zipping up the backpack.

[Less Than Beta East Tundra]

Less Than Beta bounded in with his newly bought backpack, notebook, and pencils. Spotting Somariel, he darted over to her. "Hello!" he said a bit too loudly. "Have I met you before?" Yes, he was leaning in too close. The boy needs to get a sense of personal space.

[Damien Griffiths]

Damien entered just after Less - there was no class before this one, so he'd started walking early to be nice and in time. After all, Math was one of those subjects that could go bad fast if you weren't there to see how it worked. Spotting Less and Somariel already present, he slumped down in the nearest seat.

He had to stifle a yawn - it was 4 pm now, and his morning had taken up a lot of energy. The day was ending for him right now. Mentally scolding himself, he drew some new energy up from his reserves and paid attention.

[Less Than Beta East Tundra]

Less waved at Damien to join him and Somariel. "Hey! What math do you think we will be learning? I know a little Algebra." The latter was said with a distinct sense of pride, as if Algebra was something only a few people learned. In his pack, it was; most only learned enough math to not get cheated when trading with the human villages and occasional city. Who knew how he would react to Calculus or Trigonometry?

[Somariel Lamaron]

"Yes, we met at dinner last night," Somariel told Less. "I don't know what sort of math we'll be learning, but I've already taken Pre-algebra and a bit of Algebra."

[Michelle Wilcox]

Michelle came in and sat close enough to Less than beta to hear him talk but far enough to avoid catching fleas. When the disgusting creature claimed to only know a little algebra, Michelle had to stifle a laugh but could not hide the look of contempt from her face. She hoped Somariel had not noticed.

[Less Than Beta East Tundra]

Less was very good at not getting fleas, he'll have you know! Only sick werewolves let themselves become flea-infested, and those are usually kept clean by their packmates. Admittedly, he hadn't managed to find the showers yet, so one might not be entirely unjustified in thinking he might carry a few.

Naturally, Less' wonderful ability to read the feelings of non-weres led him to think Michelle was interested in talking to him. With a cheerful wave in her general direction he called out, "Hello! I am Less Than Beta of the East Tundra pack! What is your name and family?"

[Michelle Wilcox]

(Michelle never actually said anything about fleas. That was just an internal monologue through tinted lenses)

Michelle smiled sweetly at Less and said, "Hi Less, I'm Michelle Wilcox of the United States Navy. I don't need a family." She wondered if the boy would notice if she insulted him to his face.

"So the United States Navy isn't your family?" He wouldn't have been surprised if it had been. A few of the humans he had met claimed that the Canadian Armed Forces were their family, and he thought it would be the same in the United States.

[Michelle Wilcox]

"I guess you're right, " lied Michelle. In reality she considered the Navy, especially the chain of command to be an inconvenience. She had only joined because she wanted to be a fighter pilot and she didn't care whose side she was on as long as she was having fun.
