Name: Destiny "Desi" Valencia Everett
Age: 14 (estimated)
Hair color: Light Blonde
Eye color: Light Blue
Height: 4'6"
Appearance: One look at Destiny makes it evident that there is something uncanny about this girl. Tiny enough to appear years younger and slim enough to look fragile, she doesn't seem to exist fully in the same world as everyone else. Observers tend to rub their eyes and squint at the odd, scintillating light that surrounds her and sometimes makes her look transparent; and her waist-length hair is often blown around by a breeze that isn't there. Destiny tends to favor ultra-feminine dresses, especially in pink.
Biography: Abandoned at a local hospital, Desi's age was estimated by doctors to be approximately ten. Because the girl did not know who she was or where she had come from, social workers began a search for her parents, which turned up nothing—though surely the search was hampered by a meteorite that slammed into the hospital only two days after her arrival, killing the doctor who had been trying to get the girl to remember her past.
With parents nowhere to be found, Desi entered the foster care system. Her first placement ended when the house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground despite an apparently functional lightning rod; the family escaped unscathed but sent the girl back. The second placement seemed to be working; but her superstitious foster parents eventually rejected her, claiming that something "just wasn't right" about Desi after the fourth time they found obvious cat-shaped patterns in the mildew on the bathroom wall. Desi was excited about her next placement, as the new family had the cat she said she had always wanted; but after the mailman died of spontaneous human combustion on the family's front lawn, she was sent back once again. For some time Desi bounced back and forth from family to family. One man won the lottery; another was injured in a head-on collision with his long-lost identical twin. Usually, though, the excuse given was that there was just something very strange about that girl...
St. Dymphna's Academy is Destiny's latest placement. Her social workers hope it lasts, as they have used up most other options.
Personality: Destiny is distant, dreamy, and tends to connect only fleetingly with the real world. Her previous teachers tended to assume she wasn't paying attention to what was going on around her; in reality, however, Destiny is paying attention not just to what is actually happening, but what might possibly happen. Destiny's world is a landscape of possibilities, where nothing is certain. Her speech tends to be vague and sometimes outright random.
Interacting with other people, Desi gives the impression that she feels she is the only real person in her world--everyone and everything else is just a mirage. And, while she doesn't intend it (would, in fact, be surprised to hear that the whole world actually doesn't love her), this does make Desi seem like an awfully self-centered individual.
Skills:
Destiny's magical power affects probability. At any given point in time, she can see many of the possible alternate universes--including alternate universes in which extremely improbable things happen. Destiny actively affects the exact way in which the past turns into the present, and chooses which of the possible immediate-future universes become reality. However, she has very little ability to control her choices. Her decisions are usually subconscious, and they end up embarrassing her or simply causing uselessly random coincidences much more often than they actually give her an advantage.
Given the full picture, a scientist would say that Destiny controls the collapse of the quantum wave-forms around her; but if you asked her, she'd shrug and tell you that "weird things just happen to me". Desi may never understand why her life is so strange; her poor academic skills almost ensure she'll never advance far enough to encounter Schroedinger's Cat.
