Tzu Mei busied himself with arranging boxes in front of a roped-off circle. he felt that hand-to-hand combat would be a good first lesson for the new students, and he had taken steps to obtain enough face masks and padded knives for the influx of new students.
After everything was organized enough for his liking, the professor stood next to the circle to wait for the students to arrive. Once the first ones appeared, he began a speech he had prepared. "Welcome to the course on Advanced Defensive Fighting. Before we begin, I would like all of you to do something for me. Throw away all preconceptions about honor and fair play. Do not bow to your opponent. Do not shake hands with your opponent. If you are attacked on the street, your opponent will not wait for you to get into the right stance. You must be prepared to do whatever it takes to escape, even if it means using lethal force. Any questions?"

Mellianne arrived early to class, leaving even her bag behind. She was dressed in some old clothes she had kept, which were perfect for getting dirty. She raised an eyebrow about the bit of the honor and fair play. But as she didn't have any questions, she kept her mouth shut.

Ada was also early, if not by as much as Mellianne. She'd thought ahead for once, and left her cell phone safely indoors. This course was probably not going to be fun, but given the trouble she'd gotten into last semester, she suspected it would only be a matter of time before she'd need it.

Beia jogged into the classroom, just as Tzu Mei finished his speech. She was already tired from PE, but this was the class she had waited for all day. "Can you repeat that please?" Beia asked.

Tzu Mei sighed in annoyance. "No honor. No courtesy. This class does not teach that. Be prepared to do what you must to survive." He paused to look out for any stragglers who might be coming. If they arrived mid-lesson, he would probably use them for demonstrations. "Everyone, go take a face mask and a knife from the boxes. Do not remove the padding from the knives."

Mellianne nodded and walked over to the equipment, looking for a face mask that fit properly. Once she found one, she went through the knives, finding one that didn't seem too heavy or too light. When she was done, she was fiddling with the mask as she walked back to the professor, figuring out how to put it on correctly.

Ada used similar criteria to Mellianne - face mask that fit, well-balanced knife. She tucked the mask under her arm as she walked back to the ring, making sure the padding on the knife was secure and not going to come off without warning instead.

Beia walked up to the equipment boxes, wondering why she needed a facemask. She grabbed one regardless, not wanting a knife in the head. For a knife, she chose a lighter weight one. 'Speed was key in combat after all.' She thought as she moved towards the others.

Tzu Mei was not happy about the low turnout. Perhaps word had spread about his teaching style since last semester. "This first class will be to see what you already know," he explained. "No more than two people will enter the circle at any given time, unless something unfortunate happens and I have to carry someone to the infirmary. Everyone partner up. You will take turns attacking and defending."

Mellianne blinked, looked around, and blinked again. There were only three students. It was impossible to pair up. She glanced towards Ada, figuring that she would probably be a good choice for a partner.

Beia observed the 3 person dilemma. 'Easily solved.' She thought as her hand reached out to grab Tzi's hand. "Partners?" She half asked, half informed. Her logic was simple, 'If you are going to learn, learn from the best.'

Tzu Mei glanced down at the girl, trying to determine whether she was volunteering out of bravado or an attempt to coax a better grade out of him. "Do not expect me to go easy on you. And if another student appears, you will not let them stay partnerless. Do you understand?" He turned to look out for any other students.

Laquinta walked down the lawn to the small group of people, snakes writhing about. They looked kind of weird with all the equipment around.
"Hey, is this the defense class? I'm not sure if I even need to be here." One of the snakes hissed at the small group.

Beia looked at Tzi as the new student appeared. "Awh, I was hoping to face a superior opponent." Turning to Laquinta, she pointed to the equipment, "Get a facemask and knife, then we can practice." She smiled cheerfully.

"If I want to defend myself I'd remove the hoods from my snakes. Instant statue. But I guess it can't be avoided." She picked up one of the masks, which was... awkward to put on. Putting straps through the mass of snakes was a bit of a struggle. However, she did manage to get it on properly, and took a knife. She immediately flipped it so it pointed downwards out of her fist.

Scott turned up to the defensive fighting class, noticing that he was the fifth student to arrive and that the other students were paired off.
He wasn't entirely sure how to best pick a knife, and selected one based on the expedient method of grabbing the closest. He tested its balance in his hand the same way he'd test a fencing sword.
"Um, professor, should I wait for someone else to turn up?"

Aurora sauntered into the roped-off circle. She wasn't sure she really wanted to join a defense class. She couldn't imagine anyone trying to hurt her, and she could never imagine harm to come to someone else. Even still, at least this would be one of the few classes where it wouldn't be all boring talking. At least she hoped so - it was outside afterall. If the teacher made them sit on those roped off boxes while he talked about the history of fighting she was certain she'd scream.
At least there's be more familiar faces. "Hi Mellianne, Ada!" She smiled sweetly before turning to severe looking professor. On a whim, she asked a question she'd been pondering since she saw the class listing. "I'm not sure if I qualify for this class professor. Is there a basic Defensive class I can go to?"

"There is no basic class, Robinson, and thank you for volunteering to go first. If you would remove a face mask and a knife from those boxes, please. You are partnered with Logan," Tzu Mei said. He pointed at the boxes in question without actually looking at them.
He was a little irritated at the low turnout of the class, and it showed in his tone. "Now, this first exercise will be a lesson in escape. Both of you go stand in the center of the circle. Robinson, when I blow the whistle you will attempt to leave the circle. Logan, you will attempt to stop her from doing so. The exercise will be considered to have ended when either of you is incapacitated or when Robinson has escaped. Use any resources available to you, and please act as if the knives were not padded. After the other groups have gone, your roles will be reversed."

Aurora's lower lip puffs out for being 'volunteered,' the pout quickly replaced by a scowl as she picks up the ugly face mask and knife. The mask smelled funny and holding a weapon was awkward and made her feel uneasy.
Seeing that Tzu Mei would likely not be moved by her protests, however, she slipped the mask on and stepped into the circle. Remembering from past experience about the functional deficiencies of her dress, she started off the process to alter her wardrobe. The form-fitting knee-length silver dress shimmered and weaved, melting into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. She was still in too petulant a mood to lighten up with a few rows of lights or decorations though. In her mind, leaving her clothing completely unadorned would be a kind of rebellion to Tzu Mei.

Destiny came running across the grounds, late yet again and running more out of habit than out of fear of reprimand. Scanning the other students, she scrambled to grab a mask and knife, wondering exactly what she was supposed to do with them, and holding the knife awkwardly, as though she were going to use it to cut up a steak.

Scott put on the face mask and picked up the knife, holding it firmly in his wrist (as he would his fencing sword; he had no idea what a proper knife fighting grip would be).
He stepped into circle and faced Aurora.
"Ready?" he asked.

(OOC: I'm assuming a 20 foot diameter circle. Please correct if wrong)
The face mask covered Aurora's sour expression as she shrugged. "I guess..."
The padded knife hung loosely at her side, rather than in any kind of useful position. With a few feet between her and Scott, she only had to get about 8 feet to the edge of the circle. That shouldn't be too difficult, but the whole thing seemed somewhat pointless. She was supposed to pretend that the knives were real, but honestly she'd never been directly threatened with any weapon, so she didn't have any experience with the concept.
"Do we just start?"

((That's about right, yeah.))
Tzu Mei confirmed that they were standing in the center rather than off to the side a bit after waving Destiny over to the cluster of students. "Do not be afraid of injuring your partner; we finally have an infirmary," he ordered. The whistle shrieked when he blew it.

Wait, what? Injury? Infirmary? Aurora wasn't used to threats, but she was quite familiar with pain. When the whistle blew, she jumped slightly, losing a split second before she turned tail and started running towards the circle edge away from Scott.

Post by Pieter 'Tomski' Tomachowski on Jul 16, 2010 23:50:47 GMT -5
It had taken this long for Tomski to get from the front doors to here, neraly hyperventilating all the way. He looked a litle strange, with something like a bluetooth divive covering one ear and spidering up one side of his head. This wasn't to mention his gloves, beutifully delicate things made up of silicon, copper and titanium, that came up to near his elbows. "Sir, I- I apologise for my lateness, sir, but I- I'm sorry." He was still tremblinf and looked ready to bolt back to the school building at any second. When he looked at the roped off ring and the girl running in it while both inside had knives, he had to ask. "What are we doing, please, sir?"

Ada grimaced a little at the description of the exercise - Clearly, Professor Mei was the learn-from-experience type... and experience tended to be painful. This was not going to go well. Hopefully, she'd be partnered with someone close to her own lack of ability, rather than someone superpowered.

Scott weighed up his options. He didn't see how he was supposed to stop Aurora using a padded knife - unless he threw it, but that wouldn't work, surely? - and he didn't want to hurt her in case the padding came off.
For a split second, he wavered, then ran forward and launched into a rugby tackle, aiming to trip Aurora before she could leave the circle. If he missed her, he'd have no chance to get back to his feet before she escaped, but how else was he to stop her leaving?
He felt a little bit guilty even as he did - it seemed too close to "hitting a girl" to Scott - but Professor Mei had said to use any resources available, even if rugby didn't really seem to count as "defensive fighting".

"Tomachowski, I am glad to see you here. We are doing a basic sparring session. This is mostly to see what you already know and what you need to work on," Tzu Mei explained without looking away from the circle. He was not pleased that both participants had hesitated, but hopefully the other groups would be more prepared when it came to be their turn. He was interested in seeing how Robinson reacted to Logan's tackle.

Scott's vastly better physical shape and athletic skills clear the distance between the pair as Aurora gets only halfway to the edge of the circle. She gives a yelp as his arms clamp around her waist - it was actually too difficult for him to grab her legs with her being a full foot shorter. That also meant that he had alot more weight on her too, so as soon as he had a good grip, she collapsed to the ground like as many potatoes in a bag - a silver bag.
Face planted in grass, Aurora didn't really try to resist once she'd been brought down. She idly blew hair and dirt from in front of her mouth.
"I don't like this class."

Azrek sprinted full tilt towards the class he was supposed to be at. He would have arrived on time, had he not forgotten his Pepsi, and running out would have been a catastrophe. He wasn't sure why his mom had sent him here, just because he could live forever didn't mean he had to study all the time. Of course, learning how to defend himself in a fight would prevent some random mugger from making his life much shorter.
He arrived at the designated area just as someone he vaguely recognized from the dorm, Scott maybe? tackled a girl to the ground from behind.
"Sorry sir, I had to go back to get something important."
Deciding to blend in, he grabbed a mask and a padded knife. He disliked the mask, drink through it would be difficult, and held the knife in a reveres grip, like all the cool video game characters did.
