Natoli grinned. "Well just a little more. Sometimes a creature just has magical properties that makes it a magical creature." She paused trying to format her thoughts a bit more clearly then walked over to the chalkboard. "I'm going to start on the rules first.
"1) Please don't all shout at once. In fact, please don't shout. That will usually cause the creatures to panic or get nervous."
Writing that on the board, she thought of which one to do next. "2) Do not touch any of the creatures unless I say you can. 3) No fighting with each other or the creatures. 4) No feeding the creatures, and please don't bring any food to class. And 5) Please listen to me. I can't anticipate everything that might come up, but I may need to create a rule on the fly."
She finished writing the rules and gave them time to copy them down if they so wished. While she waited, she started on what the course would entail. "I'll be bringing in harmless creatures this first year. I'll have notes on the board when you first get here and the creature will probably be in a pen. We'll go over their habitats, eating habits, powers, and in some cases weaknesses.
"I'll issue tests periodically to make sure you're paying attention. Some may be theoretical and others may be practical. I'll issue a reading and some questions when we're going to spend more than one day on a creature. The books are available to look at, and even check out at the library, though there isn't that many, so please share. Any questions?"

Kahlen sat down and pulled out a new notebook from her bag. She set Mikhail on the grass and he promptly set to eating the grass. Kahlen quickly wrote down what Professor Joss put on the board. She grimaced a little at the mention of theoretical tests. She wasn't particularly good at anything that didn't invovle some sort of memorization.
She raised her hand. "Will we get to see any of the creatures' powers? Like, if they can do something."

"I like rule two and three." She cast a sidelong glance at Mannie as she said it. "But I'm wondering what creature you've already brought here, unless you're meaning me, which I would find offensive." She had taken a notebook and a ballpoint from her bag, and had already high-speed-copied the rules and the professor's words to paper.

Natoli glanced towards Kahlen. "Yes Miss Nox, when it is safe to do so. It depends on the power of course. And the safety wards I activate before I bring them here."
She turned towards Laquinta. "Of course it won't be you. And I didn't bring the creature. He was brought here by one of you. I mean Mikhail of course. If Miss Nox doesn't mind letting me use him."

"Oh, no, I don't mind at all," Kahlen said. "Mikhail is a bit of a show off when he wants to be, aren't you?"
She picked up Mikhail, who was busily chewing on a blade of grass. He snorted when the blade was removed from his mouth. "You shouldn't eat all that grass, y'know."

Natoli grinned. "Thank you Miss Nox and I'm sure he is. His parents were the same."
After erasing the board, she turned to the class. "Mikhail here isn't a normal hedgehog even though he looks like one. He is what we call an Arkan Sonney, which means 'lucky urchin' or 'plentiful pig' in Manx. The Akran Sonney eats like a normal hedgehog, which means insects, snails, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons, and watermelons for wild ones. Domesticated hedgehogs tend to eat cat food or mixes that pet stores make. They will also eat mealworms or crickets."
She had begun to write most of it on the board. "Their spines don't carry any poison, but the sharp points do make other animals consider eating them when they roll up into a ball. Only wild ones hibernate, though domesticated ones prefer warmer areas. They are blind for the first several hours. Now if why an Arkan Sonney is practically a normal hedgehog, why are they considered a magical creature? Any ideas?"

"If the name means 'lucky', does that mean that they bring good luck to the person who owns them?" Ada asked. It seemed too obvious, but was worth a shot.

Natoli grinned sheepishly. "Yeah. Pretty easy question and all, but I hadn't really prepared anything to say and I didn't want it to be just me talking, even if it was short."
She thought for a moment. "No readings today, but make sure you're all on time in the future. Sometimes I'll go over important things before we see an animal. But that's all for today. You're welcome to stay behind if you have any questions."
((Next class will be up in a day or two, but I'll still answer questions on this thread for a while after I post the next class))
