Natoli stood in a small dirt patch near the edge of the forest. She had found a portable chalk board and had it set up with pieces of chalk. She didn't have any animals with her, but it was supposed to be a intro class, and if they finished early, they could do a bit of theory for the rest of the class time. She busied herself with writing Magical Creatures.

Mannie wandered over to the professor with a schedule in his hand. As he consulted it he asked, "Is this the class on Magical Creatures?" In his other hand he had a satchel full of mystery equipment. Though most was unrecognizable, the scalpel and pair of scissors would be enough to be more than a little unnerving.

Natoli looked him over, eying his satchel, wondering why he brought such a big bag to an intro class. Shrugging, she replied, "Aye. This is Magical Creatures. You can call me Professor Joss. You are?"

"I'm Manuel Alvarez," Mannie said, peering around in the hopes of spotting any unusual animals. "Hey, what makes the creatures magic?"

Natoli smiled a little. "Well, Mr. Alvarez. A magical creature is magic because it was born with it. Unfortunately there hasn't been in breakthroughs on how their species gained magic. I might decide to look into it at a later date though. This class is more about how to identify and deal with different magical animals, not how they became magic. If you are really curious, the librarian might know of a book that has that information somewhere."

Kahlen ran up to where Professor Joss and another student were standing. She had decided last minute to crash the class. She didn't think anyone would mind about her being in the wrong group's class.
She stopped next to the professor, holding Mikhail to her chest. He squirmed a bit and she set him on her head.
"Hullo, professor! I heard you're Mellianne's sister. I'm friends with her. I also got Mikhail here at your ranch." Kahlen grinned and patted Mikhail. He snuffled the top of her head and grabbed a strand of hair to chew on.

Natoli grinned at the new arrival. "Aye. Mellianne is one of my little sisters. Pleasure to meet you. You are?" She reached out and pet the cute little guy.
"Ah, so his new name is Mikhail? He seems to love being with you and you're taking good care of him. No complaints at anything. Be careful though., he likes to chew on things, even ones that he really shouldn't be chewing. Loves leather." She took her hand back and smiled again. "I'm sure you can find a place that has chew toys made of leather though. Though I don't know if any around here sell that kind of stuff, and I didn't bring any with me unfortunately."

"Oh, sorry!" Kahlen said. She didn't mean to forget to introduce herself. "I'm Kahlen."
She mock glared up at the hedgehog on her head. "You little devil. No wonder my dreamcatcher is practically nonexistant."
She thanked the professor for her advice. "Mellianne told me you can talk to animals. I think that's really cool. I find myself wondering what's going on his silly head sometimes."

Laquinta arrived at the class just in time. She'd unbound her snakes for today, which left them with a good deal of movementspace and her with a cloud of snakes around her head. It was a bit of a strange sight, but she'd seen the people here and decided it was worth the try.
"This is the Magical Creatures class, nai? Charéka gia té gnórimia, me lene Laquinta Sebuz."

Natoli grinned even wider. "It's alright. I used to do that until I spent two years in Japan. And yes, I can speak with them. Sometimes though, they don't have much to say. And at the moment he's expressing delight at the taste of your hair, but says that leather is still better."
She turned to the newest student who had snakes as her hair. "Hello. This is indeed Magical Creatures Miss Sebuz. I'm Professor Joss, and I'm sorry, while I know you are speaking Greek, I don't truly understand any of it. But it is nice to meet you. You are a Gorgon, correct?"

"Nai, correct. Also, sorry. 'Pleased to meet you'. It's a habit." She looked at her nails a little bit, then at the other students. So far, so good...

Natoli smiled softly at the girl. She seemed to be a slight bit shy. "Well I didn't spend that much time in Greece as I would have liked, so I didn't get a good chance to learn the language. But the people I met there all were really nice. I hope you will enjoy the class." She looked around. "A few more minutes to see if anyone else shows up, and I'll start the class."

Ada walked up, still slightly early, and both trying and failing to not stare at Laquinta's snakes. Snakes on the head - like Medusa? Could she turn people to stone? More to the point, was she a classmate or assisting the teacher?

Mannie was trying to examine the snakes on Laquinta's head without looking like he was examining them. However, subtlety does not tend to work well when one is reaching for the object of study with a pair of tweezers.

Natoli noticed Manuel reaching for the snakes. "Ah, ah. Mr. Alvarez! Just what are you doing with those tweezers?" She quickly moved in front of Laquinta, hands on hips, not quite glaring at Manuel. She would not tolerate any scientific experimentation of anyone, student or guest, in her class!
((just for clarification, she's going to call the creatures that she brings in to study as guests))

The snake the tweezers were pointed at hissed at the source of heat and smells closing in, exposing small fangs. Laquinta turned her head to see the commotion and jerked back when she saw the tweezers before Professor Joss intercepted them.
"Pou kaneissss ssu ssskopeueisss oti?! Ssstay away from me with that!" Her angry and threatened hiss immediately made it clear that coming near her snakes was completely out of the question. As a mass, they hissed in the general direction of poor Mannie. Luckily, it didn't last too long, and Laquinta realised he didn't mean to scare her at all. But rather safe than sorry, and she certainly wasn't sorry for being agressive.

Mannie blinked. He hadn't expected to suddenly get a face full of teacher. "If I hold the snakes behind the head, they won't be able to bite me," he explained as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "I'd rather do that at a distance, too." The tweezers were harmless, so why were they looking at him strangely?
It was then that he noticed that all of the snakes were acting in unison and promptly gave a loud squeal. "Ooh! How do they do that? Do you control them, or are they a hive mind or what?" He raised the hand with the tweezers and tried to step around the teacher.

Natoli moved with Manuel, keeping herself between him and Laquinta. "And why do you need to get close enough that they might bite you? It is considered rude to touch someone else when you do not have their permission, whether from spoken, or implied. And by touching her snakes, even with tweezers, is like touching Miss Sebuz."

"You're not coming close to me with those because that's my head you're pointing it at! And I will attack you if you try that again. I do not appreciate you pulling on my snakes, tróglodoutés! Touch my head an get stoned." She sneered at the smaller boy. Touching them carelessly would mean he'd get bitten, which hurt like hell, and it could possibly knock off the hoods, which was way worse. A strand of fear coiled around her heart at the very thought.
((OOC: the word means 'someone who creeps into holes', closest I could get to creep. Seems to be the source of 'troglodyte'.)

Kahlen watched as Mannie tried to get a close look at Laquinta's snakes. She shook her head, knowing that that would be a bad idea. She was glad Miss Joss took care of the situation. Kahlen wasn't that fond of snakes and didn't want to see anyone get bitten.
Kahlen also thought that learning some Greek would be nice. She figured Laquinta had called him some name and wondered what it meant.

Dang it, it seemed this was going to happen at least once a semester.
"Hello! Is anyone there?" Aurora tromped through one of the side forest paths. She had been so enthusiastic about getting to the magical creatures class that she had arrived too early. Thinking that she was actually late, she had entered the forest and promptly gotten lost. At least this time it was nice and bright. In fact - was that the edge of the forest? Yes! It'd only taken an hour!
Aurora skipped out of the forest right into the class. What luck! Who all was here? There was a new teacher she hadn't seen before, a small boy being attacked by a monster with snake heads, Kahlen seemed to have a new pet (squee she'd have to pet that later), and she saw Ada...
With a double-take she stared in horror back at the snake-monster attacking a small boy. Her skipping stopped and she let loose a high-pitched scream.

Natoli sighed. This was not going well at all. Maybe she should have set up seats so they wouldn't have felt necessary to touch each other. Which made her really wonder about Mannie's maturity level, or level of common sense. One of the two was lacking, or even both. And now the screaming from the new girl definitely would not help.
She took in a deep breath and turned to the new girl. "Is there anything wrong sweetie?" She knew that wasn't the correct way to talk to a student, but she felt that it might get her to calm down quicker.

Now that the initial reaction was over, Aurora could see that the snake girl wasn't charging at Mannie, or anyone else, and that everyone else was calm. Realizing she had overreacted, she immediately started blushing, quickly reaching a color nearly as red as her hair. Was the snake girl one of the magical creatures? The young girl had imagined magical creatures to be quite a bit smaller, cuter, and furrier than that. She wasn't... a student was she?
"N..no..." she mumbled. She was fairly certain the embarrassment was going to suffocate her.

It seemed as if something had finally sunken in, because Mannie stopped trying to go around the teacher. In fact, he even took a few steps back. "Didn't mean any harm by it," he mumbled. "Sorry for maybe scaring you." The tweezers disappeared into the satchel and were replaced by a perfectly normal notebook and pencil.

She moved one of Mikhail's forepaws in a waving gesture. He ignored that his paw was being messed with and grabbed another strand of hair to chew on.

"Fine. Just be warned, they're not toys." There seemed to be another girl showing up for the class, who looked at her like she was the monster they were going to study. In response, Laquinta smiled at Aurora, expressing 'hi there, lunch- I mean fellow student' without a word. Smiling was something she could be very expressionate with. "What kind of animal will we be studying, Professor?"

Although the fact that Laquinta could talk somewhat calmed Aurora, the hungry smile mostly undid that. Aurora didn't quite feel like closing the few yards between her and the group where the gorgon was.

Natoli resisted the urge to breathe a sigh of relief. She drew herself up a bit and breathed in and out real quick to help calm down.
"Hello all of you. I'm Professor Joss. This is the Magical Creatures class and I didn't plan on having any creatures in today as I felt going over rules and all of that was more important for a first class. However if we finish early enough, I might be able to tell you a few things about a magical creature that has already shown up. And I don't mean any of you students that others consider to be creatures. Any questions yet?"

"Is a magical creature simply defined as a creature which has magic, or is there more to it?" asked Mannie. He sat down so he could use the ground as a hard surface, and began outlining how his notes would go.
