A few days into the second semester, Tane turned up at the post office.
The package he received was thin, straight, and about five and a half feet long. He unwrapped it right there in the post office to check for any damage.
It was a wooden staff. One end widened and flattened out into a paddle-like blade. The other end looked like an abstraction of a face, with an oversized, intricately-carved tongue forming a spearhead. A tuft of feathers behind the face completed the picture.
Tane looked the staff up and down, and made a few practice swings, narrowly missing the man at the counter. Then he nodded in satisfaction and set off back to his dorm suite.
