As usual, the classroom was opened a 10 minutes early for the class to come in. Yang was sitting at his desk, with a cup of coffee and a cheese and ham biscuit, reading a novel.
'I hope my class remembered to study for that test,' he thought and took a sip.
((I'm so subtle ;D Tell me if you want first class open again))

Beiling arrived just after Yang opened the door. "Hello professor Yang." she said before progressing to her seat and opening a manga.

Yang looked up and smiled.
"Ah, Beiling." He noticed her manga and said, "I didn't know they had manga in the library."

Mellianne entered the classroom and as soon as she sat down in her desk, she pulled out her notes. As she didn't really have anything else to do, she looked over them even though she had already studied for the test yesterday.

"They don't. I brought some with me from home, but read them all. The student store's manga's are so bland, so stuck reading my old ones...again."

Yang gave a short greeting to Mellianne before turning back to Beiling.
"You know, my wife has manga in her bookstore. You could go there."

"Where is her bookstore though? I only saw the student store."

"I think her saying something about posting something on the bulletin board a while ago; it should say there. You know the small lake a few blocks to the west from here? It should be there somewhere. I should know, I live there."

"That would be nice. Then I can meet your wife too." She smiled. Life was going great at this school. So many friendly people and potential combatants.

"Excellent." Yang took another drink of his coffee and yawned. He munched on his biscuit before returning to his novel, waiting till class started...

Mellianne had finished studying her notes and figuring that if she didn't know it now, she wasn't going to know it. She set her notes back in her bag and took out a magazine about water sports, starting to flip through it and read the articles she found interesting.

The bell rang.
Yang instantly got up and looked out the door, in the hopes that someone could run in by the last minute, before he closed the door for the first ten minutes of the test...

Yang frowned. 'I guess Destiny's not going to do well on the test...' ((Unless, of course, Destiny were to show up...))
Yang closed and locked the door. He then passed out the papers for his students to do. An hour passed by, and the papers were taken back. Now the fun begins.
As usual, there was ten minute break before class began again - or, in today's case, the second part of the test began; the oral exam.
Yang pressed on a RNG and, as advertised, a number came out: 12.
"Mellianne Joss!" he called out, "you're up first!"

Mellianne sat before Yang and he flashed her what he hoped to be a reassuring smile.
"Okay, you know how the test will work. I'll say something to you in Chinese, and you reply back. You will be marked on your pronunciation and comprehension, alright?"
Yang looked at the elf and noticed her visible nervousness. "You nervous?"

Mellianne nodded. "Just a bit sir." She took a few deep breaths and calmed herself down. "I'm ready sir."

Yang nodded and took a deep breath himself. Mellianne was nervous about the test; Yang was too at administering his first real test.
He spoke in perfect, deliberately pronounced Mandarin: 今天什么天气?
"What is the weather like today?"

Post by Destiny Valencia Everett on Jul 25, 2010 20:43:40 GMT -5
Destiny had checked her bag for Tigger three times before leaving for class--which was probably why she had arrived five minutes late with the test already in progress.
The test, when she got it, confused her. She managed to fill in a few blanks with Chinese history facts, but by the time she got to the multiple-choice portion, she was badly confused.
Destiny had wanted to do well in this class; really, she had. She didn't want them to make her go away again. And now she had been late again and it was all horrible...
Destiny stared at the test in front of her. It was beginning to waver back and forth as Destiny saw the many possible ways the test was arranged, and the many ways she might fill in the answers. She so wanted to stay. This school was a beautiful place, and nobody even took her money, and there were only a few mean people instead of everybody...
No use, though. Destiny had no knack for languages, and Chinese was harder than most. Better just guess. At least, Destiny thought to herself, she wasn't too bad at guessing. She had, at one point, guessed at the answers to a Standardized Test, and ended up in a gifted class; only gifted kids turned out to be just as mean as regular ones, so that wasn't any good. But maybe it would be good here.
With the Chinese characters swimming in front of her eyes, Destiny filled in the circles at random.

Mellianne understood the question, she had always been pretty good at understanding what someone else was saying. She glanced outside the window.
Pausing to recall the words, she spoke in pretty decent Mandarin. "Today, the weather is snowing."

Yang nodded and jotted a few notes down:
- understood - well phrased - somewhat awkward intonation
He continued with the test: 现在时间几点?
"What time is it?"

Mellianne glanced down at her watch. The digital display read 4:13 pm. Looking back up, she took a breath and replied better than she had with her weather one. "It is 4:13 pm."

Yang nodded again and smiled to himself in his head. This time, he merely made a small check mark in his notes.
Next question: 你叫什么名字?
"What is your name?"

Ah, good. One she didn't have to check something else for. Mellianne almost grinned, but felt that it would be out of place.
"My name is Mellianne."
