So far, Professor Freeman admitted to himself, this class had been a bit dry. There was a large amount of background information that needed to be covered before any practical matters could be discussed. Lacking the hands-on feel of actually working with it, there had been a lot of boring, memorize-these-facts things.
This week, however, it was time to start into something interesting. On the board, he'd written a single word. Power.
((OOC - when I ask questions that draw on background information, I'll post the answers OOC along with a note on how hard it would have been to catch.))

Less Than Beta slumped down in his seat and began doodling in his notebook. After a quick glance up at the board, he changed his drawing to include wavy lines coming from various objects such as the sun. "Morning, Professor," he mumbled sleepily. "That's not a whole lot to copy down, is it?"

Damien stepped in shortly after Less, and sat down. A glance at the blackboard got his eye caught on the single word - Power. Interesting. Power in what way? General magical power, spell-specific power, elemental strength... augmenting physical power? Possibilities. For now, he'd sit and wait for the rest of the class to arrive.

"There's more to it than just that," Professor Freeman said with a bit of a smile. "Where do mages get it from? How can you keep it from them? If you're going to take on a mage, the best option is always to out-think them."

Tane flumped down into a seat near the back of the room. He was interested in magic - very interested. His people had many tales of magic, which he was beginning to suspect were not just tales. And of course, there was all the magic that infused this very school, and the awesome feats many of the other students could perform.
But he had never imagined it could be so boring.
Still, noone could ever say he wasn't a hard worker. He'd listened closely (at least until he fell asleep). He'd done extra reading. He'd taken good notes. And just as he pulled those notes out of his bag, he caught the word on the board.
'Power'.
That was a little more interesting.
He shuffled forward to a closer seat while the Professor spoke.

He ogled the professor.
"I didn't... you can read minds? That is so cool."
Damien eyes went wide at the awesomeness that was the magic professor... and then his mind turned to darker thoughts, as he realised that the porfessor probably also realised exactly what he was. His blood ran cold for a little. Please, please oh god please, be a good person and not connected to any of those jerkwads at the CASUS...

"Read minds?" Professor Freeman said, turning his attention from Less to Damien. "I never said anything about that, did I?"
He walked back to the board and dove into the lecture proper.
"Magic, ultimately, is about power. While everyone generates their own magical power, and most mages have exercised this ability to the utmost, the vast majority of a mage's power comes from external sources. There are three rough categories of power sources - the natural world, which includes the classical Greek elements, magic-storing artifacts, and supernatural sources. All of these can be affected through mundane means."
"The other thing to keep in mind is how the mage accesses his power source..."

Damien went red, as he realised the professor had responded to Less' statement, not to his thoughts. Once again, paranoia had gotten the better of him, and he felt the need to headdesk. But that would have looked even stupider - more stupid, argh - so he stuck to slumping in his chair, and trying to put his arms around his notebook so as to obscure his face. It wasn't working very well, especially since his ears looked like they'd been boiled, as red as they were.

Less yawned and tried to shake himself awake. "Three types of power sources, got it. I'm only familiar with the natural world. Do focus stones could as artifacts?" He glanced over at Damien in confusion. Was he okay? He thought the other boy looked sick, what with how red his ears were. A fever, maybe?
