Although she didn't need food, Tumult had been making a habit out of going to breakfast each day. Today, she had a glass of water - for topping off her cooling systems. Normally, she tried to stay out of the conversation, preferring to study human interaction. Today, though, events were going to conspire against her. Ada was lost somewhere in her all-consuming research project (Why hadn't she talked to the magic professor yet?), Tumult's friends online were AFK, and she'd unconsciously sat one table further into the room than usual.

Shihab wandered into the Dining Hall, yawning broadly. Now that he had a closed light source and a way into the library, nothing had stopped him so far from researching into the wee hours of the morning, and he was pushing that advantage farther than he probably should've. Grabbing a muffin, a coffee, and an energy drink, he wandered a few tables into the Dining Hall and sat down opposite Tumult, apropos of nothing. He'd taken two deep draughts of the coffee, halfway draining it, before he realized there was another person there.
"...Oh. Hello. Good morning." After rubbing his eyes for a minute, he grinned sleepily at Tumult. "Mind if I sit here?"

"No!" Tumult said, just forcefully enough to be ambiguous. "I mean, yes!"
She paused for a moment as other threads took over where logical resolution left off.
"I'm trying to say that you're welcome to sit here," she said, carefully generalizing. "I'd welcome your company. I'm Tumult."

Shihab raised an eyebrow and took another drink of coffee before responding, just to make sure she wasn't going to vanish in a puff of sparkles or something. Around here, you never knew... When she was still there after he put down the mug, he grinned again. Okay, so not a sleep-deprivation-induced hallucination. Just weird.
"Nice to make your-- most delightful-- acquaintance, Tumult," he said, with a slight bow. "I appreciate the gracious welcome." Still trying to shake himself awake, he searched for a not-awkward topic.
"So... what do you study here?" ...Clearly, he'd been thinking too much, if he was seated across from a girl and the first thing that came to mind was classes. He made a mental note to cause more trouble in Freeman's class than usual that day, and tried to ignore the immediate postscript of his mind telling him that Wasn't Going to Happen.
"What I mean is, anything interesting? I haven't seen you around before, so we're probably in different class-groups."

Kahlen rushed into the dining hall. She didn't eat much of a dinner the day before, so she was starving. She piled waffles on her plate, then turned around to look for people to sit with. She spotted Tumult and Shihab.
"Hullo!" she said, standing behind a chair. "Mind if I join you?"

Shihab grinned cheerfully up at her, back to coherency with a little caffeine in him. "Fine with me if it's fine with Tumult!" he said, deftly hooking the chair out from under the table with his foot.
"I don't think I've met you, either-- so glad I can stop avoiding the Dining Hall, especially if the company is so fine!"

"Hm, I suppose not. I don't think I have any classes with you," she said, turning a bit pink at the last part of Shihab's statement.
Kahlen quickly sat down, put Mikhail on the table, and began to demolish her waffle. She had a thought in the back of her mind that she must look silly eating like a pig, but ignored it.

Damien snoozed into the dining hall, still slightly dozing but quickly being woken up by the cool air in the building. He'd grabbed waffles and three cups of tea, steaming hot.
"Yello," he said as he sat down next to Kahlen, not noticing that other people were there. He then began demolishing the waffle with the same eagerness as Kahlen, and about halfway through picked up a cup of near-boiling tea and slung it back without a thought. Only after the waffle was almost gone did he think of greeting the others.
"How's life been treating you people? I seem to be seeing faces I don't recognise, so uh, I'm Damien, from the A group. Nice to meet you."

Susan meandored over to the cluster of her fellow students with perhaps a touch less than her usual aura of boundless happiness, her tray laden with food. She mustered a tired smile and asked hopefully while eyeing an empty seat, "None of you want to talk about Voltaire or the birth of liberalism, do you? Please?"

"I could be convinced to be interested in the topic," Tumult said, completely failing to understand Susan's meaning. "Why? Expecting another revolution?"

Shihab took a large bite of his muffin and gave Damien a friendly nod as he approached.
"Hehho 'htere," he said through the mouthful. Swallowing, he added, "I think you're in a few of my classes-- Magic For Mages and Supernatural Powers, right?"
He grinned broadly at Susan and Tumult. "Voltaire? Pfffft, he was just a conformist compared to Rousseau. And don't even get me started on Hobbes!"

Susan's eye twitched as she fought back the impulse to throtle her classmates, and sat down and began wolfing down her meal. "Please. No," she answered bluntly, "Mr. Freeman is making me go through enough of that stuff already and if I hear one more word on the topic, I'll... I'll... Do something... What the hell did he expect me to do with Verin opening a portal to wherever he comes from right in front of me anyway?"
She finished somewhat lamely as her self-control beatdown her anger. A Daunt didn't complain about the justly inflicted consequences of her actions. At least not outloud. At least not much anyway.

Beiling walked from the food area, seeing a friendly face in the crowd. She plopped her head down on Susan's shoulder, "Wanna eat with me Susan?"

Susan brightened somewhat at the sight of her after-class sparing partner. "Certainly," she answered after swallowing a mouthful fo eggs and pointed out a seat for the taller martial artist.
"Everyone, meet Beia," she offered before pointing out the others one at a time, finishing with Tumult, "Beia, meet Shihab, Kahlen, Damien, and... I'm sorry. I know I have Survival with you, but..."
She shrugged and started munching on half a sausage.

Shihab gave a graceful half-bow and, swallowing his muffin, smiled across the table at her. "Charmed, I'm sure," he said.
Looking over at Susan, he grew thoughtful. "Alright, so moving past philosophy, and how important it is to absorb it into your worldview," he intoned, the mischievous twinkle in his eyes betraying the Serious Tone in his voice, "Are you still up for the Bonfire?"

Kahlen paused in her eating to look up at Damien as he greeted her. "Oh, hey! How's it goin'?"
She resumed eating and only half listened to the subject brought up by Susan. Kahlen didn't know much at all about Voltaire.

With a spring in his feet, Herbie paced into the dining hall and grabbed a grapefruit from the trays, which he set to peeling while he walked over to the group. He'd spotted some familiarly coloured hair in there.
"Eeeeeey, g'mornin' peoples! 'Ello, ladies, can I sit wid you this fiiine wensdee?" He smiled widely, showing his rather pointy canines. He moved to a seat near Susan and Beia, but kept an eye on Tumult and Kahlen as well. Where would be the best spot...

"Pretty well, actually!" Shihab dunked a piece of muffin in his coffee and grinned at her. "I've got Cutty's go-ahead, as long as I can handle the inevitable problems that might arise from these lunatics," he encompassed the entire cafeteria with a wave of his unoccupied arm, "Being out and away from the watchful eyes of our benevelent overlords, here. I told her I had plans to ask a few of you to help me out with that problem."
Giving her a somewhat searching glance, he finished, "So, if we can agree to not talk about authority, philosophy, or very clashing worldviews, would you mind helping me set up at the beach this weekend? I'm thinking we'll take a few hours to make sure everything's taken care of Friday, and get word out for Saturday night."

"Okay," Susan answered with a grin at her sparring partner, "I bet Beia would be glad to help keep things cool. She's pretty good at nonlethal restraint once she gets the measure of a person's toughness. Almost dislocated my shoulder last time we trained. And that's not easy."

"Excellent," he grinned, and looked across at Beia with a nod. "Would you be up for tackling some troublemakers, then? Between the three of us and Less, I think we can handle things, even if Verin or someone decides to rear their head. Does 2pm on Friday work for everyone? I'll talk to Less, but since he's in our group," he said with a nod towards Susan, "He shouldn't have any classes after that."

((I'm so sorry, this reply got lost in the shuffle of ENORMOUS ACTIVITY. What, too strong? ...er, just didn't see it. Apologies.))
Shihab thought a moment, then shrugged. "Whatever you like," he replied. "We'll have the food basics -- hotdogs, buns, some drinks -- but anything further's much appreciated. If you want, a list would probably keep things from getting too redundant."

"That's uh... no? What? sacrificing chickens was not on my to-do list for this. I'll bring marshmellows, but count me out for that."
He gave the dreadlocked boy an odd look, and grabbed hold of his second cup of tea, drinking it down rapidly. Then he realised it was still almost bioling, and quickly put it down again.
