Name: Roderick Kuritan
Age: Early 30’s
Hair color: Black
Eye color: Blue and brown
Height: 5’8”
Appearance: At first sight, Roderick appears to be a rather average-looking man, albeit an extremely muscular one. He shaves his head to avoid accidents in the forge, and wears a pair of iron rings in his left ear. His wardrobe generally consists of leather forge gear over clothes he doesn’t mind getting dirty. He tends to stay unnoticed in a place as unusual as St. Dymphna’s, and that’s perfectly fine with him.
Biography: Roderick was born on the very tip of the Florida panhandle. His family was so large, and his hometown so small, that they formed a significant minority in the town's population. At the age of 14, he ran away from home and joined a rather shady Renaissance fair (i.e. one willing to hire a 14-year-old stranger with no background, credentials, etc.). It was quickly discovered that he had a talent for smithing, and was apprenticed with the fair’s blacksmith. This blacksmith was a talented man, probably over-qualified for his job at the fair, and Rod learned quickly under him. For a long time, Roderick lived happily at the fair for quite a while, completely unaware of the significance of his powers of strength. On his 21st birthday, however, the blacksmith (who was far more observant that Rod has previously assumed) explained to him that this wasn't actually just another part of puberty. Rod managed to stay at the fair for two more years without raising too much suspicion, but at the age of 23, he had to quit. He bounced from smithy to smithy around the country for a while, leaving as soon as anyone started becoming suspicious. Finding Port Virtue, where he could make full use of his talents, was a godsend for Rod, and he founded Kuritan Arms almost immediately upon arriving.
Personality: Roderick tends to be thoughtful and introspective most of the time, and enjoys working in the forge because it gives him time to think. When aggravated, confused, or simply bored, he will almost always head to the forge, pounding out batch after batch of horseshoes if he doesn't have any other work to do. His tendency to think long and hard about supposedly simple matters is often viewed as mere stupidity by many, a view supported by the fact that he’s only gotten as far as a middle school education and his drawling Floridian accent. He’s done nothing to dispel the notion that he’s simple in some way, but in reality, Rod is quite clever. Though his formal education is admittedly lacking, he wouldn’t have lasted as a carnie for as long as he did without an immense supply of practical knowledge and street smarts, and Rod has an eye for diamonds in the rough, an ear for valuable tidbits buried in blithe chatter, and an unshakeable loyalty towards those who manage to earn his trust (although that, truth be told, is often a task and a half). For some reason, he shows a strange lack of interest in his powers of strength, perhaps due to holding the belief that they were nothing unusual for so long. His family background shows nothing out of the ordinary, and Rod has shown a strange unwillingness to research further into his power's origins.
It must be noted that Roderick is thoughtful and introspective most of the time. Once every year, on the 23rd of November, a sort of madness overtakes him known as The Ceremony. The Ceremony goes something like this; an anvil is placed upside down in the middle of a field or other large, flat area. A heap of black powder is placed in the anvil’s hollow base, a fuse is placed with one end in said heap, and a second anvil is placed on top of the first anvil, right side up. Roderick then lights the fuse, and runs like hell. If it works (which, unfortunately, it generally does), the anvil is then shot about 200-odd feet in the air. School and town officials have insisted it be done a) in a totally unpopulated area and b) with expert supervision, and so far nobody’s been hurt. Rod claims it’s in honor of the various blacksmithing gods he worships; in reality, it has more to do with Rod letting his lack-of-hair down and blowing off the steam he builds up over the year. For a few days after The Ceremony, Rod tends to wander around grinning, muttering ‘Boom!’, and giggling hysterically before going back to being normal, cool-and-collected Roderick.
Occupation: Head (i.e. only) blacksmith at Kuritan Arms, a smithy in Port Virtue catering to those looking for more…exotic weapons than those sold in the Academy store. All his products are custom made to the buyer, and are always of excellent quality. As a consequence, his prices can be pretty steep. But Rod’s still the best for miles around, and you always get what you pay for.
Skills: Roderick primarily a weapon-smith, and a fairly brilliant one at that, although he tries hard (perhaps a little too hard) to stay modest. Modern firearms tend to give him trouble (understandable, given that he works exclusively with hammer and anvil), but he can handle just about anything less complicated than flintlock firearms. He can fight quite well, due to his enormous strength and exhaustive knowledge of weaponry, although his fighting style tends to be very flashy due to spending so much time watching the mock duels of the Renfair. He also has some skill in magic, especially enchanting, but only so far as it applies to his job; Rod wouldn’t last ten seconds in a duel against a trained magic-user.
