The rules for RPing can be found here.
For people are just beginning to roleplay, roleplaying is an activity where people take on a role and play it, for a story, plot, or to just have fun. There are many different ways that people roleplay, and the two main methods for Saint Dymphna's is forum RP and chat RP.
Freeform Roleplay
Roleplaying on forums can be easily compared to writing a story, however, it varies in the fact that you control only your characters, while the other people control theirs, unless there is visible consent on the part of one player for another to control their characters; controlling another person's character is called godmoding and is against the rules of this board without clear consent from the other player(s) involved.
When writing an RP post, you should always try to double check it for basic writing errors, such as spelling mistakes or grammar flurbs. This makes your post easier to understand, and the writing clearer, and helps prevent what otherwise can become an in character problem.
RP posts for SDA must all be in third person persective and in the past tense- this restriction is not because the administration finds past tense naturally better or present tense naturally worse, but is to ensure that everyone is on the same page as far as tenses go to prevent tense shifts or complete persective shifts from happening every other post.
In character RP posts earn the account $5 per post.
Chatroom Roleplay
Chatroom roleplays, depending on the kind, usually allow for more fluidity in terms of style and faster and more immediate, if shorter, responses. Due to the nature of chatrom RPing, present tense is allowed in these RPs and for their transcripts.
If two players are trying to quickly hammer out a short scene to get it out of the way, a chatroom RP might be what you are looking for.
Chatroom RPs can be done through the SDA chatroom, and then by creating a new room with "join #SDAnewroomname" to prevent confusion in the main room.
There are two methods of chatroom RPing that can be used for SDA.
Short form
Short form chatroom RPing uses asterisks to denote character actions, while regular text is used for speech. The advantage of this is that it is concise and allows rapid exchange, though it looks out of place in a thread that transferrs to or from a chatroom transcript.
Long form
Long form chatroom RPing is essentially the same as normal forum posts in terms of writing. The advantage of long form in a chatroom is that it helps ensure focus and some speed on the parts of all involved, which otherwise might be lost through the time it takes between tags on the forum.
The disadvantages of both types of chatroom RPing comes from the removal of the potential for other characters to enter and the fact that characters do not receive money from the RPing itself.
Transcripts from all chatroom RPs must be posted on the forum, preferrably with the timestamps removed and formatted for easy reading by other members.
In Character, Out of Character
Something all players should keep in mind is the difference between themselves and their characters; that is to say, you are not your character, and other players are not their characters, either. This is important in delineating between knowledge you know as a player and knowledge your character would know, as well as on an emotional level.
While having an emotional bond with your character is fine, becoming too attached to the point that you yourself feel hurt emotionally when bad things happe to your character because of plot or otherwise and you become angry or feel hurt and betrayed by other players because of actions on their characters part is not.
Additionally, knowledge that you the player learn while reading posts or from conversing with other players should not be used on an in character level; this is a form of metagaming, and is also against the rules.
In short, characters are not their players, and players are not their characters.
